Essential Killing by Jerzy Skolimowski with effects done by Platige Image

We are pleased to inform you that Platige Image has produced special effects for Jerzy Skolimowski’s Essential Killing. The film will premiere at the 67th International Film Festival in Venice, which begins on the 1st September. It will be shown as a part of the prestigious competition section of the festival.

Here is a brief look at the making of the film. The most spectacular part of the effects was preparing a special, very rare version of a Black Hawk helicopter (with hellfire missiles attached to its bottom), filling it with crew members and creating a realistic chase sequence that opens the film.

Essential Killing

We received the edited material and a lot of freedom to work on the sequence, which gave us a lot of pleasure. The only thigh restricting us was the general outline of the story, the reactions of the actor and the actual explosion that took place on the set. We could experiment in the field of placing and the movements of the helicopter, says Jakub Knapik who supervised the production of the special effects.

The animated Black Hawk was created based on a very detailed model so that it could be shown in close-up. The works on animation were preceded by detailed research into the way the machine behaves, thanks to which we could faithfully recreate its movements.  The helicopter was created is such a way that it matched the lighting conditions on the Israeli desert when shooting the film. That required, among other things, generating huge amounts of sand raised by the machine. In effect, the majority of the approximately six-weeks’ time of working on the project was devoted to picture rendering in 4K resolution and to simulations.

The effects were created in cooperation with the screenplay writer and producer of Essential Killing Ewa Piaskowska. Ewa Piaskowska and Jerzy Skolimowski are a creative duet open to new technologies and possibilities presented by digital postproduction and animation. I believe they will use them successfully in their consecutive projects, says Katarzyna Jarzyna, who supervised the production of the special effects.

We wish to thank the director and the production team for cooperation and hope they win the Golden Lions award.

Nonanimated guide to "Animated guide..."

344.jpg
DIRECTOR:
Rafał Wojtunik

I would like to show you some behind-the-scenes work on the Animated Guide to Polish Success. It was not easy to illustrate a not-that-hot subject: economy in an interesting way, and I didn’t know anything about it. Absolutely nothing. It is one of the last things on my list of hobbies.  This made it an even more interesting challenge and more stress was put on an unusual take on the subject. The production process – from writing the treatment, through the screenplay to the last rendered shot and sound editing, took almost 9 months including 6 months of working on the film itself and 3 months of preparations. The film is greasy with the cookies eaten by the crew and smells of sweat a little. Despite this it is still perhaps a nice and colourful dumpling filled with optimism and I do hope that you will think of it as interesting and worth your attention.

That's how Rafał Wojtunik starts story of how "Animated Guide to Polish Success" was created. It was one of two films created in Platige Image for EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.

The whole making of is can be downloaded from here.

We decided to show how the ruins of Warsaw after 2WW would look like if it was possible to form a cube out of them. 74 milion square meters capacity of destroyed buildings would form a 500m high cube. Marcin Kobylecki and Krzysztof Noworyta created the idea of such unusual visualisation. Bartek Kik created a series of fake photos from selected well known cities with such cube. The series of photos is a part of promotional campaign to commemorate anniversary of Warsaw Uprising, organized by Warsaw Rising Museum.

"City of Ruins" in 3D – a premiere of the flight over the ruins of Warsaw of 1945

"City of ruins", the world's first digital reconstruction of a city destroyed during the Second World War, will be presented in the Warsaw Rising Museum from 1st August. The production of the film was entrusted to Platige Image. For 2 years, over 30-people team of graphic artists worked on the film.

The film is over-five-minutes’ long simulation of the flight of a Liberator plane over the destroyed Warsaw of 1945. The image suggestively conveys the horror and the scale of destruction of the capital city after the Second World War.

If you have not seen it with your own eyes, isolated photos from the time of the war will not convey it. It is only the film that truly reveals what Warsaw looked like just after the war had ended and from what kind of ruins it was raised, Jan Jan Ołdakowski, the Director of the Warsaw Rising Museum. encourages the visitors to come to the Museum and watch the film.

Today we present a trailer and frames promoting the undertaking. The production of the project was supervised by Piotr Śliwowski (project manager, the Warsaw Rising Museum), Michał Gryn (CG Supervisor, PI) and Damian Nenow (director, PI).
